Why this game exists

Made by a son, for his mum

My mum fell in love with mahjong solitaire in the nineties, playing Shanghai on the Sega. Decades later she was still playing — but on websites so stuffed with pop-ups, banners and video ads that the tiles were the hardest thing to find.

So I made her one. A calm little tea garden with soft colours, gentle music, big readable tiles and absolutely nothing else in the way. I'm sharing it too, hoping it brings a few quiet minutes to your day.

How to play

Easy to learn, lovely to master

  1. Find two identical tiles that are both free, and tap them to remove the pair.

  2. A tile is free when nothing sits on top of it and its left or right side is open.

  3. Clear the whole board to win. Stuck? Use a hint, undo or shuffle.

Frequently asked questions

Which tiles can I match?

Two identical free tiles always match. There are two special families: any flower matches any other flower, and any season matches any other season — even if their pictures differ.

What exactly is a “free” tile?

A tile is free when no other tile covers it, even partly, and at least one of its long sides (left or right) is not touching another tile. Blocked tiles are dimmed slightly so free ones are easy to spot — you can turn this off in the settings.

Can I get stuck with no possible moves?

Every deal is generated so that it can be solved. Still, an unlucky choice can lead to a dead end — just undo a few moves or shuffle the remaining tiles.

Is it really free? What's the catch?

No catch. It's a hobby project made for my mum. There are no ads, no in-app purchases, no subscriptions and no data collection.

Does it need an internet connection?

No. Once installed, the game works fully offline — perfect for trains, planes and gardens.

Is it available on iPhone?

For now Tea Garden Mahjong is only available for Android phones and tablets.

I found a bug or have an idea. How can I tell you?
